This cocktail is simple, classy, and super tasty.
In other words, it’s the opposite of this month… For real though, is it just me or has this been a crazy month?
At one point a few weeks ago, my roommate and I threw our hands up and called it a night. There gets to be a point in the night when you begin to realize you’re not processing anything–no matter how pressing the material may be. At this moment, instead of just going to be like we usually do, we decided to experiment a bit and make our own cocktail using on-hand ingredients we don’t get to use very often.
And thus this was created!
- 1 part peppermint schnapps
- 1 part creme de cacao (chocolate liquor)
- 1 part half and half
- Chocolate syrup
- Drizzle a martini glass with chocolate syrup
- Combine the alcohol and half and half in a shaker with ice. Shake, and stain into glass.
I’ve heard a million covers of this song, but the original is without a doubt my favorite.
When Hawkins and the band recorded the original recordings, he and his band were so drunk that they abandoned the original intent of the song as a refined ballad and instead sang/screamed/grunted/gurgled his way through the piece. While the recording was his greatest commercial success (even despite radio stations banning it due to its sexuality), he had no recollection of recording it. In fact, Hawkins had to relearn the song from the record!
As the song grew in fame, DJ Alan Freed offered Hawkins $300 to emerge from a coffin on stage while singing I Put a Spell on You, and thus began his reputation as the original “Shock Rocker.”
This only scratched the surface of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ incredible life. I definitely encourage everyone to go to the Wikipedia page on him!
